How long does it take to reach B2 in French?

There is no single answer, and anyone promising a fixed number of months is guessing. What we can give is a practical range of guided study hours and the factors that move you faster or slower through it.
Practical estimates of cumulative guided hours
| Level | Cumulative guided hours |
|---|---|
| A1 | about 60β100 |
| A2 | about 160β200 |
| B1 | about 350β400 |
| B2 | about 550β650 |
Count personal study on top. If you already speak Spanish, Portuguese or Italian, reading and vocabulary usually move faster; listening and pronunciation still need dedicated time.
What changes your timeline
- Starting level: an honest placement test avoids repeating what you know β and skipping what you don't.
- Intensity: 5 hours a week gets you to B2 from zero in years, not months; 15β20 hours a week can shorten that a lot.
- Consistency: short daily practice beats occasional long sessions.
- Active skills: speaking and listening practice with feedback, not only reading and grammar exercises.
- Prior languages: Romance languages help with vocabulary; they can also create false friends and pronunciation habits to unlearn.
Rough calendar examples
From A2 to B2 (roughly 350β450 more hours): at 6 hours a week, expect well over a year; at 15 hours a week, roughly six to eight months. These are illustrations, not promises.
How to know you are really B2
B2 means you can follow most standard speech on familiar and some abstract topics, argue a point of view with examples and write a structured text. Level exams and a mock under timed conditions are better evidence than a feeling.
