Free French level test: find your real starting level
Vocalyra's placement assessment is a free, adaptive French test that estimates where you should start on the CEFR scale, from A1 to B2 and beyond. It takes a free account, ten core questions, and one or two short confirmation rounds only if your level is not yet clear.
Why take a placement test before you start
- You avoid repeating beginner lessons you already know.
- You avoid starting too high and getting lost in the first week.
- Your vocabulary, verb and dictation practice is matched to your level from day one.
- You get a baseline you can measure progress against later.
What the assessment helps determine
- Your estimated CEFR band (A1, A2, B1 or B2) with a confidence level.
- Your stronger and weaker skills across grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, functional language, usage and verbs.
- The Vocalyra course and lesson where you should begin.
What this test does not certify
- It is not an official CEFR certificate and does not replace one.
- It is not a TCF, TEF, DELF or DALF score and cannot be used for immigration or university applications.
- It does not assess speaking or free writing; it estimates your starting point for learning, not a final level.
What happens after your result
- You see your estimated level, your skill profile and a recommended starting course.
- Your dashboard points you to the exact next step, and practice tools open at your level.
- If you are preparing for TCF Canada or TEF Canada, your level is shown against the NCLC benchmark your pathway needs.
Frequently asked questions
Is the French level test free?
Yes. The placement assessment is free. You create a free account, complete a short setup, and take the test. No payment is required to get your result.
How long does the test take?
The test is adaptive, so the length varies. It starts with ten questions and adds one or two short confirmation rounds only if your level is not yet clear.
Is this an official CEFR or TCF certificate?
No. It is a placement estimate that tells you where to start learning. For immigration or official purposes you still need an official exam such as TCF Canada or TEF Canada.
Can I retake the test?
Your first result sets your starting point, so the assessment is designed to be taken once, honestly. If you already have a result, your dashboard shows it instead of asking you to retake the test.
