Why noun gender matters
Every French noun is masculine or feminine. Gender changes the article (le, la, un, une), adjective endings and many pronouns, so guessing wrong ripples through the whole sentence.
Endings such as -tion or -eau point to a likely gender, but they are tendencies, not guarantees. Learn each noun with its article.
