French gender rules: masculine or feminine?
Vocalyra teaching team · Last updated:
Every French noun is masculine or feminine, and the article, adjectives and past participles follow it. There is no rule that works every time, but word endings give strong tendencies. Learn the tendencies, then learn each noun with its article.
The golden habit: learn the article with the noun
Write and say « une table », « un livre », never just « table ». Before a vowel, « l' » hides the gender (l'arbre, l'eau), so note « un arbre », « une eau » instead.
Endings that are usually masculine
| Ending | Examples | Common exceptions |
|---|---|---|
| -age | le fromage, le voyage, le garage | la page, la plage, l'image (f), la cage |
| -ment | le moment, le gouvernement | rare |
| -isme | le tourisme, le réalisme | rare |
| -eau | le bateau, le gâteau | l'eau (f), la peau |
| -oir | le miroir, le couloir | rare |
| -at, -et | le chocolat, le billet | rare |
Endings that are usually feminine
| Ending | Examples | Common exceptions |
|---|---|---|
| -tion, -sion | la nation, la télévision | le bastion (rare) |
| -té | la liberté, la santé | le côté, l'été (m), le pâté |
| -ure | la voiture, la culture | le murmure |
| -ette | la baguette, la fourchette | le squelette |
| -ance, -ence | la chance, la patience | le silence |
| -ie | la boulangerie, la vie | le génie, l'incendie (m) |
These are tendencies, not guarantees. Nouns ending in -e are not automatically feminine: le problème, le musée, le livre.
Other useful patterns
- Days, months, seasons and languages are masculine: le lundi, le printemps, le français.
- Many people nouns have two forms: un étudiant / une étudiante, un acteur / une actrice.
- Some nouns change meaning with gender: le livre (book) / la livre (pound), le tour (turn) / la tour (tower).
- A few words are always one gender whatever the person: une personne, une victime, un témoin.
