Days, months and dates in Spanish

Vocalyra teaching team · Last updated:

Spanish calendar words are friendly: days and months are written in lowercase, and dates use ordinary numbers. Two details trip learners up: the week starts on Monday, and only the first of the month uses primero.

Days and months

Days: lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábado, domingo. Months: enero, febrero, marzo, abril, mayo, junio, julio, agosto, septiembre, octubre, noviembre, diciembre. None take capital letters in Spanish, and calendars start the week on lunes.

Saying the date

The pattern is el plus number plus de plus month: el cinco de mayo, el veintitrés de octubre. Only the first day uses the ordinal: el primero de enero. To say on a day, use el or los: el lunes is on Monday, los lunes is on Mondays. Hoy es lunes needs no article.

Common errors

Do not capitalise days and months: write lunes, not Lunes. Do not say en lunes for on Monday; Spanish uses el lunes. The date order is day then month, matching most of the world: 5/4 is el cinco de abril. To ask the date you can say ¿qué fecha es hoy? or the very natural ¿a cuántos estamos?

Seasons and years follow the same plain pattern: la primavera, el verano, el otoño, el invierno, and years are read as ordinary numbers: mil novecientos noventa y nueve for 1999. Useful time phrases round out the set: anteayer (the day before yesterday), pasado mañana (the day after tomorrow), la semana que viene (next week), el mes pasado (last month). For birthdays Spanish asks ¿cuándo es tu cumpleaños? and answers with the same date pattern: el doce de marzo. Keep dates in diaries and say each new one aloud when you write it down.
