Asking questions in Spanish: the accent that marks a question
Vocalyra teaching team · Last updated:
Spanish question words look like their statement cousins, but in a question they always carry a written accent: qué, cuál, quién, dónde, cuándo, cómo, cuánto, por qué. The accent is the flag that a question is being asked.
The core question words
Qué asks what or which from an open set, cuál or cuáles asks which from known options, quién or quiénes asks who, dónde asks where, cuándo asks when, cómo asks how, cuánto asks how much or how many, and por qué asks why. Every direct question in Spanish also opens with an inverted question mark: ¿dónde vives?
Qué versus cuál, and the cómo trap
Before a noun use qué: ¿qué libro lees? Before ser with a definition use qué: ¿qué es esto? But before ser for a choice or specific fact use cuál: ¿cuál es tu nombre?, ¿cuál prefieres? English speakers often say cómo te llamas correctly for names yet wrongly extend qué es tu nombre; the natural form is ¿cuál es tu nombre?
| Spanish | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| qué | what, which | ¿Qué quieres? |
| cuál, cuáles | which one, which ones | ¿Cuál es tu casa? |
| quién, quiénes | who | ¿Quién llama? |
| dónde | where | ¿Dónde está el baño? |
| cuándo | when | ¿Cuándo llegas? |
| cómo | how | ¿Cómo estás? |
| cuánto, cuánta | how much | ¿Cuánto cuesta? |
| por qué | why | ¿Por qué no? |
Agreement and word order
Cuánto agrees with the noun: ¿cuántos años tienes?, ¿cuántas personas vienen? The plural of cuál is cuáles: ¿cuáles son tus planes? After the question word, the verb usually comes before the subject: ¿dónde vive tu hermana?, not ¿dónde tu hermana vive? In informal speech ¿qué tú quieres? appears in some regions, but standard order keeps the verb before the subject in these standard patterns.
The written accent distinguishes question words from their everyday relatives: que is a connector (creo que sí) while qué asks what; como means like or as while cómo asks how; cuando means when in statements while cuándo asks it; porque means because, one word, while por qué asks why in two. Indirect questions keep the accent too: no sé dónde está, dime cuándo vienes. Reading aloud and stressing the accented word is the quickest way to feel the difference between the statement and the question forms.
