French False Friends for Brazilian Portuguese Speakers

Vocalyra teaching team · Last updated:

French and Portuguese share thousands of Latin words, which makes reading French feel easy for Brazilians. The danger is the small set of words that look the same but mean something else. This guide covers the eight that cause the most real mistakes, with the correct French word for what you actually meant.

Why Similar Words Mislead You

When two languages share a root, the meanings often drift apart over centuries. Your brain sees a familiar shape and fills in the Portuguese meaning automatically. The fix is not to avoid cognates (most of them are reliable) but to learn the exceptions as pairs.

Eight False Friends to Learn as Pairs

Learn each line as a pair, not as a single word.

Example Sentences

  • J'attends le bus depuis dix minutes. (I've been waiting for the bus for ten minutes.)
  • Elle a répondu au téléphone. (She answered the phone.) Not: Elle a attendu le téléphone.
  • Il serre sa fille dans ses bras. (He hugs his daughter.)
  • Le serveur apporte une tasse de café. (The waiter brings a cup of coffee.)
  • C'est un peu bizarre. (It's a bit strange.) Not: C'est exquis.

Embrasser is also used in friendly letters: Je t'embrasse means roughly "Love" or "Hugs" at the end of a message. Context matters, but in a face-to-face situation it means a kiss.

A Simple Routine That Works

Write each pair on one flashcard with a full sentence on both sides. Review the eight cards for five days in a row, then mix them into your normal vocabulary review. Saying the correct sentence out loud helps far more than rereading the list.
