Adjective order: opinion before size before origin
Vocalyra teaching team · Last updated:
When several adjectives come before a noun, English speakers put them in a fixed order without thinking about it. Learners can use the same sequence: opinion, size, age, shape, colour, origin, material, purpose.
The standard sequence
A memory aid is opinion, size, age, shape, colour, origin, material, purpose: a lovely small old round blue French wooden dining table. In real life two or three adjectives are the limit; longer strings sound unnatural even when the order is right.
Opinion and fact
The deepest rule is that subjective opinion comes before objective fact. Beautiful is a judgement, so it goes first: a beautiful red car. Red is observable, so it sits closer to the noun. Swapping them, a red beautiful car, sounds wrong to every native speaker even if they cannot explain why.
| Position | Type | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | opinion | lovely, terrible, nice |
| 2 | size | big, small, long |
| 3 | age | old, new, young |
| 4 | shape | round, square |
| 5 | colour | red, dark, green |
| 6 | origin | French, Brazilian |
| 7 | material | wooden, plastic |
| 8 | purpose | walking (boots), dining (room) |
Commas and and
Adjectives from the same group can take commas or and: a long, boring meeting. Adjectives from different groups take nothing between them: a long boring meeting is fine without a comma. Purpose words behave almost like part of the noun and never take a comma: running shoes, not running, shoes.
When the order feels hard to recall, split the description: a beautiful old Italian car can become a beautiful old car from Italy. Native speakers do this constantly in speech. Another trick is the and test: adjectives joined by and belong to the same group (a long and boring meeting), while adjectives that resist and belong to different groups (a beautiful and Italian car sounds odd, so no comma). Listening for the rhythm helps too, because the wrong order breaks the natural stress pattern of the phrase.
