English articles: a, an, the and no article

Vocalyra teaching team · Last updated:

English articles are small words with big rules. A and an introduce something new or general; the points to something specific; and many plural and uncountable nouns take no article at all.

A and an: something new

Use a or an the first time you mention a singular countable thing: I saw a dog. The listener does not know which dog yet. Use an before a vowel sound: an apple, an hour (the h is silent), but a university (it starts with a y sound).

The: something specific

Use the when both people know which thing you mean: the dog I saw was friendly. Also use the for unique things (the sun, the internet), superlatives (the best option) and some fixed phrases like the same.

When to use no article

General statements with plural or uncountable nouns take no article: Cats sleep a lot, Milk is white, not the cats or the milk. Meals, languages and most countries also take no article: we have lunch at noon, she speaks Portuguese, they live in Canada. A common learner error is adding the before general plurals.

Jobs and nationalities follow the singular rule too: she is a doctor, he is an engineer. Plural professions drop the article: they are doctors. Rivers, seas and mountain ranges take the (the Nile, the Alps), while single lakes, mountains and most countries take none (Lake Como, Mount Fuji, Brazil), with the familiar exceptions like the Netherlands and the United States. When in doubt, ask whether the listener can identify the exact thing; if yes, choose the, if it is one of many, choose a or an, and if you mean the whole class in general, choose nothing.
