Spanish reflexive verbs: me, te, se and more

Vocalyra teaching team · Last updated:

English often says I wake up or I wash my hands without a reflexive pronoun. Spanish frequently uses one: me despierto and me lavo las manos. Understanding the pronoun and the verb together is the fastest way to make daily-routine sentences sound natural.

Choose the pronoun for the subject

The basic reflexive pronouns are me, te, se, nos, os and se. With lavarse, say yo me lavo, tú te lavas, ella se lava and nosotros nos lavamos. The verb still conjugates normally; the pronoun identifies the person affected by the action. Not every verb with se translates into an English myself construction. Me levanto usually means I get up, not I lift myself.

Pronoun placement in ordinary sentences

With a single conjugated verb, the pronoun normally comes before it: me ducho por la mañana. With an infinitive after another verb, two positions are possible: voy a ducharme and me voy a duchar. With a positive command, attach the pronoun: levántate. With a negative command, place it before the verb: no te levantes. The accent in levántate preserves the correct stress after the pronoun is attached.

Body parts use a different pattern

Spanish commonly uses the definite article with body parts when a reflexive pronoun already identifies the owner: me lavo las manos, se cepilla los dientes. English normally uses my hands and her teeth. Translating word by word can produce the awkward me lavo mis manos. Another trap is meaning: dormir means to sleep, while dormirse often emphasizes falling asleep. The extra pronoun can signal a meaningful change rather than a simple grammatical decoration.

Make a routine you can really say

Write four actions from your own morning in chronological order: me despierto, me levanto, me ducho, me visto. Then ask a friend ¿A qué hora te levantas? and listen for the matching pronoun. If the subject changes, change both the verb and the reflexive pronoun. Reading the whole phrase aloud is more useful than memorizing a column of pronouns without context.
