Spanish -ar present tense for English speakers

Vocalyra teaching team · Last updated:

English normally keeps the same verb form across most subjects: I speak, you speak, we speak. Spanish regular -ar verbs change their endings to show who performs the action. Once you understand the pattern, you can use dozens of common verbs such as hablar, estudiar, trabajar and comprar. This lesson focuses on the present indicative for everyday habits and current facts.

Core pattern and forms

Remove -ar from the infinitive and attach the present ending. For hablar, the forms are hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, habláis and hablan. The ending -o belongs to yo, -as to tú, -a to él, ella or usted, -amos to nosotros, -áis to vosotros and -an to ellos, ellas or ustedes. In most of Latin America, ustedes replaces vosotros for plural you. Subject pronouns are often omitted because the ending identifies the subject: Trabajo en casa is complete.

What your first language can hide

An English speaker may say yo habla because English does not demand many different present-tense endings. Spanish requires yo hablo. Another common mistake is treating usted like tú: usted habla is correct, not usted hablas. Compare I study Spanish with Estudio español. The Spanish subject can disappear, but the ending cannot. Also avoid assuming that every -ar verb is regular: pensar and jugar change their stems in some forms and need separate practice.

Use it in a real situation

In a normal conversation you can say Trabajo por la mañana, Estudiamos español los martes and ¿Hablas inglés? These express routines or general information. To form a negative sentence, put no before the conjugated verb: No compro café. To ask a question, Spanish often relies on intonation and question marks rather than an English-style do: ¿Trabajas aquí? In writing, remember both the opening ¿ and closing ? marks for direct questions.

Active practice and error correction

Choose one regular -ar verb and build a six-person chart. Then replace the verb with estudiar and comprar without changing the endings. Say three true sentences about your week, one about yourself, one about a friend and one about your family. Listen for the contrast between hablo and habla. Finally, write a short dialogue using ¿Trabajas? and ¿Estudias? so the conjugations serve communication rather than isolated memorisation.

For an honest self-check, cover the answer column first and explain the choice in a complete sentence. Then read the model sentence aloud, make one small change, and write the result without looking. If your answer is wrong, identify whether the problem is meaning, agreement, tense, or word order before repeating it. Five accurate sentences you can use in conversation are worth more than fifty forms copied without understanding.
