Por or para: purpose aims forward, cause looks back

English for covers two Spanish words. Para points forward to a goal, destination or recipient; por looks back at a cause, exchange or duration. Keeping that arrow in mind resolves most choices.

Para: goals and destinations

Use para for purpose (estudio para aprender, I study in order to learn), destination (salgo para Madrid, I leave for Madrid), recipient (este regalo es para ti) and deadlines (para el lunes, by Monday). Everything aims at a future point.

Por: causes, exchanges and durations

Use por for cause or reason (lo hice por ti, I did it because of you), exchange or price (pagué diez euros por el libro), duration (por dos horas, for two hours), movement through a place (caminamos por el parque) and means (por correo, por teléfono). Gracias por and por favor are fixed.

The trickiest pairs

Trabajo para una empresa means employed by; trabajo por la mañana means in the morning. Estoy por salir and estoy para salir can both express an imminent departure, with regional differences in usage. When unsure, ask which arrow fits: a goal ahead is para, a cause behind is por. Learners from English overuse para because for sounds close.

A few more fixed frames are worth memorising as chunks: por eso (that is why), por si acaso (just in case), por fin (finally), para siempre (forever), para variar (for a change). Por also appears with the passive voice for the agent: fue escrito por Cervantes. And estar por plus an infinitive can mean to be in favour of in some regions, while estar para often describes readiness or an imminent action. When you read or listen, mark every por and para for a week and ask which arrow it follows; that habit builds the instinct faster than any rule list.
