French stressed pronouns: moi, toi, lui and others

French has a set of stressed pronouns used when a person stands alone, follows a preposition, or receives emphasis. They are not interchangeable with ordinary subject pronouns.
Learn the full stressed-pronoun set
The common forms are moi (me), toi (you, informal singular), lui (him), elle (her), nous (us), vous (you), eux (them, masculine or mixed), and elles (them, feminine). Say avec moi, pour toi, chez lui, sans elle. After a preposition, do not use je or il as if they were English me or him. French lui can be both a stressed pronoun and an indirect-object clitic, but its position and function differ.
Use emphasis and short answers
Moi, je préfère le thé means As for me, I prefer tea. The stressed pronoun adds contrast, while je remains the grammatical subject. Qui veut venir ? Moi ! is a natural short answer. Compare Lui, il travaille ici with Il travaille ici; the first highlights him in contrast with someone else. With c’est, use a stressed pronoun: C’est moi, c’est elle, ce sont eux. Avoid C’est je and C’est ils.
Why English speakers confuse the forms
English me appears in several structures, but French distributes roles more carefully. Je parle is a subject; Marie parle avec moi uses a stressed pronoun; Marie me parle uses a preverbal object pronoun. These sentences do not mean exactly the same thing. Also remember that French on has no special stressed counterpart: to emphasize we, speakers may use nous, on in a full sentence such as Nous, on part maintenant.
Build a conversation around contrasts
Ask Qui vient avec toi ? Answer Elle vient avec moi. Then ask C’est pour qui ? Answer C’est pour lui. Finish with a contrast: Moi, je travaille le matin; elle, elle travaille le soir. Read aloud and pause slightly after the stressed pronoun when it introduces a topic. Underline the prepositions and circle each pronoun to check whether it is stressed or a subject.
| Use | French | English |
|---|---|---|
| After preposition | avec moi | with me |
| Short answer | Moi ! | Me! |
| Emphasis | Toi, tu sais. | You know, though. |
| After c’est | Ce sont eux. | They are the ones. |
Stressed pronouns can also appear in comparisons: Elle est plus grande que moi. The comparison does not change moi into je.
