When is a final consonant pronounced in French?

French spelling keeps many letters it no longer pronounces, especially at the end of words. A memory aid called CaReFuL covers the most useful pattern, as long as you also know its main exceptions.
The default: final consonants are silent
In words such as petit, grand, trop, vous and nez, the final consonant is not pronounced. This also applies to the plural s and to many verb endings: ils parlent sounds the same as il parle. Learners who pronounce every letter sound clearly foreign, so dropping these sounds is one of the quickest improvements you can make.
The CaReFuL letters
The consonants c, r, f and l are often pronounced at the end of a word. Remember them with the English word careful, which contains all four.
| Letter | Usually pronounced | Main exceptions |
|---|---|---|
| c | avec, sac, parc | blanc, tabac, estomac |
| r | car, hiver, finir | infinitives in -er: parler; nouns in -ier: papier, premier |
| f | neuf, chef, actif | clef (also spelled clé) |
| l | sel, avril, journal | gentil, outil, fusil |
Other patterns worth knowing
- A final consonant followed by e is pronounced: petit is silent, petite ends in a t sound.
- Some numbers change: six and dix end in an s sound alone, but are silent before a consonant (six livres) and become z before a vowel (six amis).
- Words borrowed from other languages often keep their final sound: le bus, le gaz, le week-end.
- Liaison can bring a silent consonant back before a vowel: les amis, petit ami.
Some words vary between speakers, for example the final t of fait in un fait. When in doubt, check a dictionary that shows phonetic transcription.
A practical routine
When you learn a new word, say it aloud before checking whether the final letter is heard. Mark exceptions in your notes, and listen for them in audio. Pay most attention to adjectives with masculine and feminine forms, because the final sound often carries the gender: grand and grande, vert and verte.
