French reflexive verbs for everyday routines
Vocalyra teaching team · Last updated:
English says I get up and I go to bed, while French commonly uses je me lève and je me couche. The extra pronoun is part of the verb construction. Learning it together with the conjugated verb prevents many predictable mistakes.
Pronouns must match the subject
With se lever, the present tense is je me lève, tu te lèves, il se lève, nous nous levons, vous vous levez, ils se lèvent. The first pronoun refers back to the subject; the verb ending also changes. Me and te become m’ and t’ before a vowel sound, as in je m’habille. Do not say je se lève or nous se levons. Say the whole pair aloud to build automatic agreement.
Negatives and questions
The reflexive pronoun sits immediately before the verb in the present: je ne me couche pas tôt. In informal spoken French, ne is often dropped, but it remains useful in formal writing. For a question, ask À quelle heure tu te lèves ? in informal speech or À quelle heure est-ce que tu te lèves ? in neutral standard French. English learners often put the pronoun after the verb, but that is not the usual French pattern.
Passé composé uses être
In the compound past, many reflexive verbs use être: je me suis levé, elle s’est levée, nous nous sommes couchés. Past-participle agreement can be tricky. With se laver, elle s’est lavée has agreement, but elle s’est lavé les mains does not agree with the subject because les mains is the direct object after the verb. At A1, focus first on the common routine patterns before tackling every agreement exception.
Talk about a real day
Write four sentences about yesterday and four about today. Today: je me réveille, je me douche, je m’habille. Yesterday: je me suis réveillé, je me suis douché, je me suis habillé. Choose the appropriate written agreement for the speaker where required. Practicing your own schedule connects grammar with a situation you will describe frequently in conversation, at school and during oral exams.
