Preterite or Imperfect in Spanish? A Storytelling Approach
Spanish has two main simple past tenses, the preterite (comí, fui, hablé) and the imperfect (comía, iba, hablaba). English often uses one form for both, so learners hesitate every time they tell a story. Instead of memorizing long lists, it helps to think like a storyteller: some verbs move the story forward, and others paint the scene around it. This guide shows you how to make that choice with confidence.
The storyteller's view
Imagine filming a scene. The imperfect is the background: the weather, the setting, what people were doing, how they felt, what usually happened. The preterite is the action: the events that happen one after another and change the situation.
"Era una noche tranquila. Llovía y yo leía en el sofá. De repente, sonó el teléfono. Me levanté y contesté." The first three verbs set the scene. The last three are events that move the story forward.
When to use the preterite
- Completed actions at a specific moment: Ayer llamé a mi madre.
- A sequence of events: Llegué, dejé la maleta y salí a cenar.
- Actions with a clear beginning or end: La reunión duró dos horas.
- Something that interrupts another action: Sonó el teléfono mientras cocinaba.
When to use the imperfect
- Background and description: La casa era grande y tenía un jardín.
- Ongoing actions in the past: Mientras cocinaba, escuchaba la radio.
- Habits and repeated actions: De niño, jugaba al fútbol todos los sábados.
- Time and age: Eran las ocho. Tenía diez años.
- States of mind and feelings as background: Estaba cansado y quería dormir.
If you could say "used to" or "was ...ing" in English, the imperfect is usually right.
Signal words that help
Some time expressions tend to go with one tense. They are not absolute rules, but they are useful hints.
- Often with the preterite: ayer, anoche, el año pasado, una vez, de repente, en 2019.
- Often with the imperfect: siempre, a menudo, todos los días, mientras, de niño, antes.
Verbs that change meaning
A few common verbs shift meaning depending on the tense, which is a good sign that the choice matters.
- Conocía a Ana (I knew Ana) / Conocí a Ana (I met Ana).
- Sabía la verdad (I knew the truth) / Supe la verdad (I found out the truth).
- Quería ir (I wanted to go) / No quise ir (I refused to go).
- Podía hacerlo (I was able to, in general) / Pude hacerlo (I managed to do it).
Common mistakes
- Using the preterite for descriptions: "La ciudad fue bonita" is possible in some contexts, but to describe a place you saw, "La ciudad era bonita" is usually more natural.
- Using the imperfect for a single completed event: "Ayer iba al médico" sounds incomplete; "Ayer fui al médico" states the event.
- Forgetting that habits use the imperfect: "Cuando vivía en Lima, comía ceviche cada semana."
Like ser and estar, this is a choice about meaning, and both forms are sometimes correct with slightly different nuances.
A quick self-check
Choose the preterite or the imperfect.
- Cuando (ser) niño, (vivir) en el campo.
- Ayer (comprar) un libro nuevo.
- (Hacer) sol cuando (salir) de casa.
- Mientras (estudiar), mi hermano (llegar).
Answers: 1 era, vivía (background, habit). 2 compré (completed event). 3 Hacía (background), salí (event). 4 estudiaba (ongoing), llegó (interruption).
How to practise
Tell short stories from your own life. Start with two or three sentences of background in the imperfect, then add three events in the preterite. Say them out loud, then write them down. Reading short stories and noticing which tense each verb uses also builds intuition quickly. Structured Spanish lessons online bring both tenses back regularly in listening and speaking tasks, so the choice gradually becomes automatic.
